2010 Spring Newsletter

The 2010 season is rapidly approaching and the Swansea Tennis Club is ready to welcome you home again.

President’s Message

First and foremost I would like to welcome and thank all the 2009 membership for their ongoing support of the Swansea Tennis club. The Swansea Tennis Club is recognized by the city and the community as a strong participant in the social well being of the community and your membership goes a long way to keeping this tradition going and growing into the future. We are also very proud of our Junior Tennis Programs and the significant benefit they deliver to the children of our neighborhood.

I'd also like to thank the 2009 club executive for volunteering their time and energies to make this all happen. In fact it appears as if their work and general management has resulted in the club being more active in a host of areas namely Club Tournaments, monthly Social Round Robins, membership in the Ontario Tennis Association, which increases the club’s profile throughout the metropolitan area, and getting access to the Swansea Field House and washroom.

This year our 2010 executive is committed to attracting new members and improving the communication with existing Members by providing them with the choice to access Club News and Events via email. To that end our Executive has created a new website and new club logo and will be participating in community events. You can also expect to see Swansea Tennis Club shirts to help us get the word out.

Don't miss out on News and Events this season by signing-up for the club newsletter and go to our website at swanseatennis.com for the latest news or upcoming events on our Events Calendar.

When you sign up for the club newsletter via email you can also select your personal preferences for Club News and Events so you will receive only what interests you all season long.

Wing Armstrong is on board with his spring and fall programs. Stan and Nick will be operating their summer school as usual. Wing will also be giving private lessons at the club at times generally appropriate with club play and interests. His lessons are not part of any club fees and should be discussed with Wing separately.

Similar announcements will be posted inside the event board at the club.

City Drainage Work in Rennie Park

Please note that your club executive has been busy planning a full season of activity, however the City of Toronto is moving forward with work in Rennie Park that will impact the courts at some point. Despite our best efforts we are challenged by a lack of specific information from the city and we don’t yet know when the work will be completed or what the full impact will be on the courts. We have requested, and are reasonably assured, that the work will start at the end of August.

Should part or all of the courts be unavailable during our regular season your executive will look for alternative venues to host affected programs and events.

We are hoping for a very active year so don’t sit on the sidelines and miss out!

Thanks

Steve Reylea

President

Rule Changes In Affect For 2010

To ensure a clear understanding of the club policies relating to the fair attribution of court time to all members, the following rule changes have been made and will be enforced from this season forward:

  • ‘Prime Time’ is defined as between 6.30pm and 8.30pm from Monday to Friday.
  • Doubles play has priority over Singles play during Prime Time. Singles players will not be allowed to sign-up for play, nor will they be allowed to go on court when there are Doubles groups waiting.
  • Junior Members are permitted to bring Junior Guests in line with the general guest policies of the club, however Junior Members are NOT allowed to bring Adult Guests (including, but not limited to, Parents and Coaches).

Members should familiarize themselves with the full list of Club Rules. For a listing of our rules click on "About" and "Rules".

Let's work together to ensure that the club is fun and enjoyable for everyone!

Membership Registration For 2010

No Shoe-tag, No Play – We will continue to enforce this rule to ensure that court time belongs to members!

This year we will no longer be processing membership applications via regular mail, all sign-up will be in-person. This way you avoid the inconvenience of having to send in your membership and the sometimes long wait to receive your shoe-tags.

For your convenience the following opportunities will be available for completion of your membership application and to receive shoe-tags:

  • Thursday March 25th, 7– 9pm - Sign-up Night at the Rennie Park Clubhouse (not the Community Centre)
  • Saturday April 10th, 10am to 2pm - Opening Day/Court Clean-up and Shoe-Tag Day (rain day April 11th)
  • Subsequently at the courts when court supervisors are on duty (typically Mon, Wed, Friday evenings from 7-8pm).

While expanding the variety of playing opportunities this year the club has been able to maintain the same membership rates as last season.
